Alan

On the occasion of 75 Years of a Liberated ‘s-Hertogenbosch, November Music, together with the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, issued a composition commission to Jesse Passenier. For his composition, titled Alan, Passenier found inspiration in Operation Alan of the 53rd Welsh Infantry Division, which liberated the city after an intensive six-day battle. The work places four choirs opposing each other, encircling the audience, which creates a dynamic, acoustic spectacle, playing with the distribution of roles within the choirs.

City Chronicler Eric Alink wrote the text Chalk especially for this occasion, giving it a personal twist, with spot-on imagery and ambiguity. The layered text is reflected in the sometimes warm and then powerful sound of the choir. In the story, a girl takes you into her experience from the eve of the battle until the moment of liberation. Her world turns out to be innocent, but the music interprets the ambiguity, caught in the narration.

Alan was performed on De Parade (the main city square) on October 26, 2019 as part of the celebration of 75 Years of a Liberated ‘s Hertogenbosch, and on November 1, 2019 at the Grote Kerk (Grand Church) in the city centre as opening event of November Music Festival. The choirs were led by Bernhard Touwen, and composed of local amateur choirs, with a central role for Vocal Ensemble Markant.
